Overview

The TrueNAS Mini X+ steps up from the 6-bay Mini X with eight hot-swap drive bays and 32 GB of ECC DDR4 as the base configuration — delivering more raw capacity and more ARC cache in the same compact desktop form factor. Where the Mini X suits workloads up to ~108 TB, the Mini X+ extends the ceiling to ~144 TB without requiring a rack-mounted appliance.

Two 10 GbE SFP+ ports are standard equipment, two M.2 NVMe slots provide dedicated L2ARC and ZIL/SLOG cache, and TrueNAS SCALE handles file sharing, containerized applications, VM hosting, cloud sync, and ZFS replication from a single browser-based interface. No per-seat licensing, no per-feature add-ons — everything TrueNAS SCALE includes is available from day one.

Capacity and Performance

8 Bays + 32 GB ECC RAM — More Room to Grow

The Mini X+ adds two drive bays and doubles the base memory configuration compared to the Mini X — giving workloads that have outgrown a 6-bay NAS room to expand without stepping up to a rack-mounted appliance. 32 GB of ECC DDR4 provides a larger ARC (Adaptive Replacement Cache), improving read performance for large working sets that exceed what 16 GB can cache. Eight hot-swap bays make drive replacement and expansion a tool-free operation.

M.2 NVMe Cache Acceleration

Two M.2 NVMe/SATA slots support an L2ARC read-cache drive and a ZIL/SLOG synchronous-write log device. Database and VM workloads see dramatically reduced latency when a ZIL device handles synchronous writes, while L2ARC extends the effective read cache beyond what DRAM alone provides.

Hot-Swap Drive Bays

All eight drive bays are hot-swappable. Failed drives are replaced without powering down the appliance — RAID-Z rebuild begins immediately on the replacement drive while the pool continues serving data normally.

Data Protection

OpenZFS Checksums

Every block is checksummed at write time and verified at read time. Silent corruption is detected and repaired from redundant copies automatically — the same protection that enterprise storage platforms provide.

RAID-Z1, Z2, Z3, and Mirrors

Eight bays support RAID-Z1, RAID-Z2 (recommended), RAID-Z3, or mirrored vdev configurations. RAID-Z2 on 8 drives provides 2-drive fault tolerance with 6 drives of usable capacity.

Immutable Snapshots

ZFS snapshots are created in milliseconds and cannot be modified after creation. Ransomware that gains access to SMB shares cannot delete or encrypt existing snapshots — roll back to any prior point in seconds.

Cloud Sync + ZFS Replication

Push encrypted datasets to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure Blob, or any S3-compatible target on a schedule. Replicate to a remote TrueNAS via encrypted SSH for 3-2-1 backup without additional software.

TrueNAS SCALE

Open-source, Linux-based NAS OS from TrueNAS. Browser-based management UI, REST API, AD/LDAP integration, VMware VAAI support, and TrueCommand multi-array management — all included at no software cost.

Containerized Applications

Deploy Plex, Nextcloud, MinIO, Vaultwarden, Syncthing, and hundreds of apps from the TrueNAS SCALE catalog in isolated Kubernetes containers — running alongside storage workloads on the same hardware.

VM Hosting

TrueNAS SCALE supports Linux and Windows virtual machines with KVM. Run a firewall VM, a Pi-hole instance, or development VMs directly on the Mini X+ without a separate hypervisor host.

IPMI Remote Management
