TrueNAS Mini Series · Comparison

TrueNAS Mini X+ vs TrueNAS Mini R

The two most-featured Minis cover two different deployment shapes: the Mini X+ is a compact 5+2-bay desktop unit (up to 110 TB), and the Mini R is a 12-bay 1U rack-mount (up to 264 TB). Both run the same TrueNAS SCALE, ECC RAM, and 2× 10 GbE SFP+ — the question is desk vs rack and capacity.

Which one's right for you?

Choose the Mini X+ if…

  • You're deploying to a home office, edit suite, branch office, or any space where a tower form factor fits and rack space doesn't exist.
  • 5+2 bays and ~110 TB are enough headroom for the workload.
  • Quiet operation matters — the X+ runs whisper-quiet on a desk.

Choose the Mini R if…

  • You have rack space (1U) and want to consolidate Mini-class storage into the rack alongside switches and servers.
  • 12 bays + up to 264 TB is the right capacity tier — roughly 2.4× the X+.
  • The deployment is a small data center, network closet, MDF/IDF, or a remote office with a rack.

Where they're identical

Both run TrueNAS SCALE (Linux-based, OpenZFS), have ECC RAM, dual 10 GbE SFP+ networking, and the full Mini Series protocol stack (SMB, NFS, iSCSI, S3-compatible). Both are the right tool for "Mini-class" workloads — home labs, SMB file/print, branch-office backup targets, Plex/media servers, remote-site archives. If you outgrow either, the rackmount path is the R-Series.

Other Mini options: Mini E and Mini E+ are the entry tier at 1 GbE, Mini X is the X+'s smaller sibling, and Mini XL+ is the largest desktop Mini at 8+2 bays.
