  • Max Raw Capacity: Up to 72 TB (4 × 18 TB)

Overview

The TrueNAS Mini E is the most affordable way to put genuine TrueNAS hardware and OpenZFS under your data. Built on ECC RAM and powered by TrueNAS SCALE, it delivers the same end-to-end checksumming, snapshot-based data protection, and multi-protocol access that enterprise TrueNAS platforms provide — in a compact desktop form factor sized for home offices, small businesses, and remote-site deployments where simplicity and reliability matter more than maximum throughput.

Four 3.5″ SATA bays accommodate up to 72 TB of raw capacity with large-format drives. Dual 1 GbE ports with LACP support provide up to 2 Gbps of aggregate throughput — more than sufficient for SMB file sharing, backup targets, and Plex media server workloads. Two M.2 slots allow L2ARC read cache and ZIL/SLOG log devices to be added as workloads grow.

Features and Benefits

What separates the TrueNAS Mini E from generic consumer NAS appliances.

Data Integrity

ECC RAM + OpenZFS — No Silent Corruption

The Mini E pairs ECC DDR4 with OpenZFS to close both the disk and the memory corruption vectors that generic NAS appliances leave open. ZFS checksums every block at write time and verifies at read time — corrupted data is detected and repaired from redundant copies before any application sees it. ECC RAM prevents single-bit memory errors from silently flipping data in transit. Together they provide the same data integrity guarantee that TrueNAS delivers in enterprise data centers.

Automated Scrubs

ZFS background scrubs read every block on the pool and compare it to its stored checksum. Any corrupted block is repaired from parity automatically. Schedule scrubs weekly or monthly — no administrator action required.

RAID-Z1 and RAID-Z2

With 4 bays, the Mini E supports RAID-Z1 (single-drive fault tolerance) or a mirrored pair for maximum redundancy. OpenZFS RAID is software-defined — no proprietary RAID card required.

Connectivity and Protocols

01

SMB for Windows

TrueNAS SCALE serves SMB v3 shares natively to Windows PCs and workstations. Join to Active Directory for domain-integrated access control without additional software.
02

NFS for Linux and macOS

Mount TrueNAS datasets as NFS v3 or v4 shares from Linux servers or macOS clients. No client-side agent required — standard OS NFS client connects directly.
03

iSCSI Block Storage

Present TrueNAS LUNs as iSCSI block devices to virtualization platforms, backup appliances, or applications that require block-level storage access.
04

Cloud Sync and Replication

Sync datasets to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure Blob, or any S3-compatible endpoint on a schedule. Replicate to a remote TrueNAS via encrypted ZFS replication for off-site backup.

Software and Management

TrueNAS SCALE

TrueNAS SCALE is TrueNAS’ Linux-based open-source NAS operating system. It includes a full-featured browser UI, REST API, Active Directory and LDAP integration, ZFS management, and a built-in application catalog for Plex, Nextcloud, and more.

Application Catalog

Deploy containerized applications from the TrueNAS SCALE catalog with a single click: Plex Media Server, Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, MinIO, and dozens more — running in isolated Kubernetes containers alongside your storage workloads.

IPMI Remote Management

The onboard IPMI interface provides out-of-band access for remote power control and console access even when the OS is unresponsive — essential for locations where physical access is inconvenient.

Snapshot Scheduling

Create per-dataset snapshot schedules with configurable retention policies. Roll back any dataset to any prior snapshot point without restoring from backup — ransomware and accidental deletion protection built in.

Frequently asked questions

The TrueNAS Mini E is the entry tier of the Mini Series — a compact 4-bay desktop NAS with an Intel Atom dual-core CPU, 8 GB ECC RAM (expandable to 16 GB), 2× 1 GbE networking, and up to 72 TB raw capacity. Runs TrueNAS SCALE (Linux-based).

The Mini E+ adds a 5th drive bay (5 vs 4), increases the capacity ceiling to 108 TB, and offers an optional 10 GbE upgrade on top of the baseline 2× 1 GbE.

Up to 72 TB raw (4 × 18 TB drives). ECC RAM and OpenZFS ensure data integrity, even at the entry tier.

Yes — every Mini Series model ships ECC RAM standard, even the entry-tier Mini E. ECC plus OpenZFS bit-rot detection is the Mini Series's baseline data-integrity guarantee.

Home offices, small-office file shares, photographer/videographer Lightroom catalogs, branch-office backup targets where 4 bays and 1 GbE are sufficient.
