The Challenge

Most backup failures aren’t detected until recovery is attempted. Tape degradation, incomplete cloud syncs, and silent data corruption mean that “backed up” does not always mean “recoverable.” Ransomware has raised the stakes further — a backup target that is reachable from the production network is no backup at all if the attacker can reach it.

TrueNAS addresses both problems. OpenZFS checksums every block at write time, so a corrupted backup is detected immediately — not during the emergency restore. ZFS snapshots are immutable by design: once created, they cannot be modified or deleted by any process that does not have explicit administrative access. Combine that with off-site replication and cloud archival, and TrueNAS delivers a backup chain that can actually be trusted.

Immutable Snapshots and ZFS Protection

OpenZFS — Every Block Checksummed, Every Snapshot Immutable

TrueNAS snapshots are read-only ZFS clones created in milliseconds with zero performance impact. They cannot be modified after creation — even by a user with full NAS access — making them inherently ransomware-resistant. OpenZFS checksums every block end-to-end: when a file is read from a snapshot, the checksum is verified against what was originally written. If the data was corrupted on disk, TrueNAS detects it and repairs from a redundant copy before it reaches the backup application.

Snapshot Schedules and Retention Policies

Define per-dataset snapshot schedules down to the minute. Retention policies automatically expire old snapshots — keep hourly snapshots for 48 hours, daily snapshots for 90 days, and weekly snapshots for a year, all without manual intervention.

Instant Rollback, No Restore Required

Roll back any dataset to any prior snapshot point in seconds — no restore job, no tape mount, no wait. Individual files can be recovered directly from any snapshot without rolling back the entire volume.

Replication and Cloud Offload

Site-to-Site ZFS Replication

Replicate datasets asynchronously from one TrueNAS to another over encrypted SSH. Only changed blocks are transferred after the initial seed — replication bandwidth scales to available WAN capacity without impacting production I/O.

Cloud Sync to S3, Azure, and Backblaze

TrueNAS Cloud Sync tasks push datasets directly to Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, or any S3-compatible endpoint — with AES-256 client-side encryption before data ever leaves the building.

TrueCloud Backup to Storj

TrueCloud Backup (powered by Storj) provides end-to-end encrypted, geo-redundant object storage designed specifically for TrueNAS backup workloads — no egress fees for restores, no surprise bandwidth bills.

Backup jobs land on TrueNAS, which then snapshots and replicates off-site automatically — delivering a 3-2-1 backup architecture without a separate cloud gateway appliance.

S3-Compatible Object Storage Target

TrueNAS exposes S3-compatible object storage via MinIO AIStor. Any backup application that supports S3 — Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity, or custom scripts — can write directly to on-premises TrueNAS object storage without a cloud intermediary.

WORM and Air-Gap Options

TrueNAS datasets can be configured with ZFS holds that prevent snapshot deletion for a minimum retention period — meeting WORM requirements for SEC 17a-4, HIPAA, and similar mandates without dedicated WORM appliances.
