The Challenge

Pure-cloud storage is expensive for active datasets and slow for recovery. Pure on-premises storage leaves organizations exposed when a site goes offline. On-Premises S3-Compatible Object Storage

MinIO AIStor — S3 API on Your Own Hardware

TrueNAS integrates with MinIO AIStor to present on-premises storage as a fully S3-compatible object store. Any application that writes to Amazon S3 — ML training pipelines, backup software, data lake tooling, or custom code — can point to the on-premises TrueNAS endpoint instead. Data stays in your data center, latency drops to LAN speeds, and you pay per drive, not per GB per month.

S3 Versioning and Lifecycle Policies

MinIO on TrueNAS supports S3 object versioning, lifecycle policies, and bucket replication — the same semantics that applications expect from AWS S3, delivered on-premises with no per-request or per-GB fees.

IAM and Access Control

MinIO on TrueNAS supports AWS-compatible IAM policies, access keys, and bucket ACLs. Multi-tenant access control isolates different teams or applications to separate buckets on the same physical TrueNAS pool.

TrueNAS Cloud Sync tasks push or pull datasets to Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, or any other rclone-compatible endpoint on a schedule — incremental, encrypted, and bandwidth-throttled during business hours.

TrueCloud Backup via Storj

TrueCloud Backup integrates TrueNAS with Storj decentralized cloud storage for end-to-end encrypted, geo-redundant backup with no egress fees on restore. Data is split-encrypted before upload — Storj nodes never see plaintext.

ZFS Replication to Remote TrueNAS

Replicate TrueNAS datasets to a second TrueNAS at any remote site over encrypted SSH. Only changed blocks transfer after the initial seed — delivering an off-site recovery point without a third-party DR appliance.

Bandwidth Throttling and Scheduling

Configure cloud sync and replication tasks to run at off-peak hours with bandwidth caps. Prevent backup jobs from saturating WAN links during business hours while still completing nightly transfers within the available window.

Hot/Warm/Cold Tiering

Active working datasets live on on-premises NVMe or hybrid TrueNAS pools. Completed or aged datasets sync automatically to cloud warm storage. Cold data moves to deep archive tiers — managed by TrueNAS lifecycle policies, not manual intervention.

Cloud-Burst for Compute

Stage datasets on on-premises TrueNAS during ingest, then sync to a cloud bucket before a cloud compute burst job. When the job completes, results sync back to TrueNAS for permanent storage — keeping expensive cloud storage to a minimum.

Multi-Site Replication

Replicate from primary site TrueNAS to a DR site TrueNAS and simultaneously sync to a cloud provider — providing both a warm on-premises DR target with fast RTO and a cold cloud copy for worst-case scenarios.

Client-Side Encryption Before Upload

TrueNAS encrypts datasets client-side before any cloud sync or replication. Encryption keys never leave your environment — even if a cloud provider is compromised or subpoenaed, your data remains inaccessible without your key.
