Step 1. Identify your primary workload
Pick the workload that drives the purchase: file sharing, virtualization, backup target, video post-production, AI/ML datasets, or database. Each workload has different priorities — capacity, latency, throughput, or per-tenant isolation. Knowing the primary workload constrains the rest of the decision.
Step 2. Set a capacity target and growth horizon
Estimate raw capacity needed today, then a 3-5 year horizon. Add 30% headroom for snapshots, replication, and free space. The Mini Series tops out around 264 TB; R-Series scales to 6.5 PB raw; M-Series HA hybrid reaches 30 PB; F-Series all-flash sizes to 20 PB effective; V-Series goes hyperconverged at hyperscale.
Step 3. Decide whether you need dual-controller high availability
HA matters when an unplanned controller failure would interrupt a critical workload (production VMs, on-air broadcast, 24/7 record-retention). If yes, your options are M-Series (HA hybrid) or F-Series (HA all-flash with optional dual-controller). If single-controller is acceptable, R-Series, H-Series, and the Mini Series are cheaper and simpler.
Step 4. Pick a media tier: HDD-hybrid, NVMe-accelerated hybrid, or all-NVMe flash
HDD-hybrid (R-Series, M-Series) gives the lowest cost per TB and is the default for backup and bulk file storage. NVMe-accelerated hybrid (H-Series) adds NVDIMM cache for latency-sensitive workloads without going all-flash. All-NVMe flash (F-Series, V-Series) is for IOPS-heavy workloads — databases, VDI, financial trading, AI inference.
Step 5. Match networking to your client fanout
Estimate aggregate concurrent throughput your clients will demand. A 1 GbE site fits the Mini E/E+. 10 GbE SFP+ fits Mini X/X+/R/XL+ and entry rackmount. 25/40/100 GbE fits R/H/M-Series for mid-tier enterprise. 400 GbE fits R60 and V160 for AI/ML and hyperscale.
Step 6. Verify compliance requirements
If you have FIPS 140, NIST 800-209, GP-OS STIG, or HIPAA/PCI requirements, the F-Series and M-Series have certified configurations. Other models can run encrypted but may not carry the same accreditation evidence. Confirm with your compliance officer before shortlisting.
Step 7. Shortlist 2-3 models and compare side-by-side
Use the in-page comparison tables on each product page (R20/R50/R60, H10/H20/H30, M30/M40/M50/M60, F60/F100, Mini X+/Mini R) or the dedicated /compare/ pages. Focus on the differences that matter for your workload — capacity, throughput, networking — not the ones that don't.
Step 8. Request a configured quote
Once you've shortlisted 1-2 models, request a quote with your capacity target, drive count, NIC option, and rack budget. OpenStorageNAS — as an Authorized TrueNAS Partner Reseller — returns a configured quote within 24 hours and stays on the order through delivery. Call 877-352-0547 or use the quote-request form.
