Move Data Anywhere, Automatically, Without Compromise

TrueNAS makes data mobility a built-in capability — ZFS async replication over encrypted WAN, cloud sync to S3, Azure, and Backblaze, TrueCloud Backup for off-site protection, and rclone for any destination, all managed from a single UI.

TrueNAS data mobility and replication

The Challenge

Data does not live in one place. Production workloads run on-premises, disaster recovery sites need a current copy, remote offices generate data that must flow to a central archive, and cloud services require access to on-premises datasets. Stitching together rsync scripts, cloud gateway appliances, and manual tape shipments creates a fragile mobility layer that breaks under operational pressure — and rarely delivers a recovery point objective that anyone is proud to explain to leadership.

TrueNAS was built with data mobility as a core design principle. ZFS async replication uses a snapshot-diff model: after the initial transfer, only changed blocks travel over the link, making efficient use of limited WAN bandwidth regardless of dataset size. Cloud sync tasks run on configurable schedules and push encrypted data directly to object storage endpoints without an intermediary. TrueCloud Backup adds a purpose-built off-site cloud target with no egress fees. rclone integration extends mobility to nearly any storage service on the planet — all managed from the same TrueNAS web UI used for everything else.

How TrueNAS Moves Data Across Sites and Clouds

Snapshot-based replication, encrypted cloud sync, and universal rclone support for a complete data mobility platform.

ZFS Asynchronous Replication

Changed-Block Replication — Bandwidth-Efficient, Encrypted, and Consistent

TrueNAS ZFS replication sends only blocks that changed since the last successful snapshot, making it practical to replicate large datasets over commodity internet links. The replication stream is encrypted with SSH, so data is protected in transit without a separate VPN appliance. At the destination, datasets arrive as consistent ZFS snapshots — the replica is always a known-good point-in-time copy, not a partially updated filesystem that might be inconsistent at the moment of a failover.

Bidirectional and Multi-Hop Replication

Replicate from primary to DR site, from DR site to a tertiary cloud, or in both directions for active-active configurations. Multi-hop replication chains allow data to flow from an edge TrueNAS to a regional hub to a central data center — all managed from the central TrueNAS UI with per-link scheduling and bandwidth throttling.

Scheduled and Bandwidth-Throttled Tasks

Replication tasks run on a user-defined schedule and can be throttled to avoid saturating WAN links during business hours. Define separate schedules for nightly full-incremental and weekly consolidations. Monitor replication lag and task completion history from the TrueNAS dashboard.

Cloud Sync and Off-Site Data Movement

01

Cloud Sync to S3, Azure, and Backblaze

TrueNAS Cloud Sync tasks move datasets directly to Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, or any S3-compatible endpoint. Data is encrypted client-side with AES-256 before it leaves the building, and sync is bidirectional — pull data back from cloud to on-premises just as easily as pushing it out.
02

TrueCloud Backup to Storj

TrueCloud Backup uses the Storj decentralized cloud as a purpose-built off-site target. Data is encrypted end-to-end before upload, split across geographically distributed storage nodes, and reassembled only for the authorized TrueNAS that owns it. No egress fees, no bandwidth billing surprises.
03

rclone for Any Destination

TrueNAS SCALE includes rclone, giving access to over 70 cloud storage providers including Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, SFTP servers, and on-premises object storage endpoints not covered by the built-in Cloud Sync providers. If rclone supports it, TrueNAS can sync to it.
04

Encrypted WAN Replication

All TrueNAS replication traffic is encrypted over SSH. For environments with strict data-in-transit requirements — HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or federal security mandates — no additional VPN or encryption overlay is required to meet in-transit encryption standards.

Data Lifecycle and Migration

Snapshot-Based Migration — Move Petabytes Without Downtime

Migrating from one TrueNAS to a larger system, from an older platform to a new one, or from a remote site to a colocation facility can be accomplished without application downtime using ZFS snapshot replication. Send the initial seed over a local network connection, ship the appliance to its new location, then sync only the delta over WAN. Final cutover requires only a brief network reconfiguration — no extended maintenance window, no full data copy over WAN.

Automatic Snapshot Retention at Destination

Replication tasks can be configured to maintain a defined number of snapshots at the destination independently of the source retention policy. Keep the last 30 daily snapshots at the DR site even if the source only retains seven, giving a longer recovery window at the off-site location without storing unnecessary data on production hardware.

API-Driven Mobility Automation

Trigger replication tasks, create on-demand snapshots before batch jobs, and monitor transfer status via the TrueNAS REST API. Integrate data mobility operations into CI/CD pipelines, data engineering orchestrators, or infrastructure automation tools like Ansible and Terraform.
