Enterprise File Sharing Without the Enterprise Price Tag

TrueNAS delivers simultaneous SMB3, NFS v4, and AFP access from a single storage pool — with Active Directory integration, 10/25 GbE throughput, and ZFS snapshots protecting every shared dataset, all without per-client licensing.

TrueNAS SMB and NFS file sharing

The Challenge

Traditional NAS appliances lock organizations into a single protocol, charge per-seat licensing for Active Directory integration, and offer no built-in data protection beyond RAID. When a department needs SMB shares for Windows workstations and NFS exports for Linux servers simultaneously, most products require separate appliances or expensive add-on licenses — and neither approach protects data at the storage layer itself.

TrueNAS solves this with OpenZFS as the foundation. Every dataset can be exported over SMB3, NFS v4, or both at once. Active Directory domain join is built into the web UI at no extra cost. ZFS snapshots run on a per-dataset schedule, so the moment a user accidentally overwrites a file, recovery is a right-click away from Windows Previous Versions or a simple NFS mount of the snapshot directory — no backup window required, no restore job to run.

How TrueNAS Powers Enterprise File Sharing

Multi-protocol access, identity integration, and ZFS data protection in a single unified platform.

Multi-Protocol Access from a Single Pool

SMB3, NFS v4, and AFP — Simultaneously from One Dataset

TrueNAS serves Windows, Linux, macOS, and ESXi clients from the same ZFS pool without data duplication or separate appliances. SMB3 shares deliver Windows-native ACL support, opportunistic locking, and encryption in transit. NFS v4 exports provide Kerberos authentication and fine-grained delegation for Linux and Unix clients. All protocols read and write to the same underlying dataset, so there is never a question of which copy of a file is current.

Active Directory & LDAP Integration

Join TrueNAS to an Active Directory domain in minutes from the web UI. Users and groups are imported automatically — no manual account creation, no per-seat licensing. Share-level and file-level ACLs follow the same permissions model as Windows Server file shares, making migration transparent to end users.

10 GbE and 25 GbE Throughput

TrueNAS Mini and R-Series ship with 10 GbE standard; H-Series supports 25 GbE. Link aggregation (LACP) multiplies throughput for multi-client workloads. SMB multichannel allows a single client to saturate multiple network paths to the server, reducing latency for large sequential file operations.

ZFS Snapshot Protection for Shared Data

01

Per-Dataset Snapshot Schedules

Schedule automatic ZFS snapshots for every shared dataset independently — hourly, daily, or on a custom cron expression. Snapshots consume only the space of changed blocks, so protecting a 10 TB share costs a fraction of a full copy.
02

Windows Previous Versions Integration

TrueNAS exposes ZFS snapshots as Windows Previous Versions via the VSS provider built into SMB3. End users can right-click any file or folder in Windows Explorer and restore a prior version without calling the helpdesk — dramatically reducing IT support burden.
03

Ransomware Resistance

ZFS snapshots are read-only and cannot be modified or deleted by any SMB or NFS client, regardless of permissions. Even if ransomware encrypts all live files, the most recent snapshot remains intact and can be rolled back in seconds.
04

Snapshot Replication to DR Site

Replicate share snapshots asynchronously to a second TrueNAS at a remote site or cloud instance. Only changed ZFS blocks travel over the WAN, making efficient use of limited uplink bandwidth while maintaining a consistent off-site recovery point.

Storage Efficiency and Management

Compression, Deduplication, and Quotas — Per Dataset

TrueNAS applies LZ4 or ZSTD compression transparently at the dataset level, typically reducing unstructured file data by 20–40% with negligible CPU overhead. Per-dataset quotas prevent any single department or project from consuming the entire pool. Thin provisioning means shares can be sized generously without pre-allocating raw capacity — actual space is consumed only as data is written.

Centralized Web UI and API

Create, modify, and monitor SMB shares, NFS exports, and user permissions from a single browser-based interface. The full TrueNAS REST API allows shares to be provisioned and managed programmatically, enabling integration with ticketing systems and automated onboarding workflows.

Audit Logging and Compliance

SMB audit logging records file access events to a structured log stream, supporting compliance requirements for HIPAA, SOC 2, and internal data governance policies. Logs can be forwarded to a SIEM via syslog for centralized analysis and alerting.
