Overview

The TrueNAS Mini R brings the Mini Series software stack to a 1U rackmount chassis — making it the right choice for environments that need Mini-class capacity and pricing in a data center or server closet rack, rather than on a desk. Eight hot-swap 3.5″ bays, dual 10 GbE SFP+ ports, and a full-featured TrueNAS SCALE installation give it the same capabilities as the Mini desktop lineup with a rack-native physical profile.

Like all Mini Series products, the Mini R runs TrueNAS SCALE: open-source, no software licensing, and a full feature set including ZFS snapshots, cloud sync, Active Directory integration, iSCSI block storage, SMB and NFS file sharing, and a containerized application catalog. IPMI out-of-band management is included — the Mini R is fully manageable remotely, making it practical for colocation or remote office server rooms where physical access is limited.

Features and Benefits

What the TrueNAS Mini R delivers as the rack-mountable member of the Mini family.

Rack Form Factor

1U Rackmount — Mini Class Storage for the Server Room

The Mini R is the only TrueNAS Mini model in a 1U rack chassis. It occupies a single rack unit, fits standard 19″ racks, and ships with rack ears included. For organizations that run a small server rack in a closet, colocation cage, or branch office MDF, the Mini R provides TrueNAS Mini storage without requiring a dedicated shelf for a desktop appliance. Eight hot-swap bays and IPMI management make it operationally suitable for environments where day-to-day physical access to the NAS is limited.

IPMI Out-of-Band Management

Dedicated IPMI LAN provides remote power control, console access, and hardware sensor monitoring regardless of OS state — essential for rack deployments in colocation or remote offices where physical access to the chassis requires scheduling.

Hot-Swap Drive Bays

All eight drive bays are hot-swappable. Replace a failed drive without downtime or data loss — ZFS begins the resilver immediately on the replacement drive while the pool continues serving data to connected clients.

Connectivity

01

Dual 10 GbE SFP+

Two 10 GbE SFP+ ports deliver full 10 Gbps bandwidth to connected clients or upstream switches. Connect to an existing 10 GbE switch or use DAC cables for direct server attachment in colocation environments.
02

SMB, NFS, and iSCSI

Serve Windows SMB file shares, Linux NFS mounts, and iSCSI block LUNs from the same storage pool simultaneously. No proprietary client software required — standard OS protocols connect natively.
03

Active Directory and LDAP

Join the Mini R to existing Active Directory or LDAP directories. Per-share permissions are enforced through existing directory groups — no separate NAS identity management for domain-joined deployments.
04

Cloud Sync and Replication

Push encrypted datasets to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure Blob, or any S3-compatible endpoint on a schedule. Replicate to a remote TrueNAS via encrypted ZFS replication for off-site backup.

Data Protection

OpenZFS Self-Healing

Every block on the Mini R is checksummed at write time and verified at read time. Silent corruption is detected and repaired from redundant copies automatically — the same protection used in enterprise TrueNAS deployments.

RAID-Z1 and RAID-Z2

Eight bays support RAID-Z1 (1-drive fault tolerance) or RAID-Z2 (2-drive fault tolerance). RAID-Z2 on 8 drives provides 75% usable capacity with protection against 2 simultaneous drive failures.

Immutable Snapshots

ZFS snapshots are created in milliseconds and cannot be modified or deleted by ransomware processes. Schedule per-dataset snapshots with configurable retention policies — rollback in seconds without restoring from backup.

ECC RAM

Error-correcting code DDR4 memory prevents single-bit in-memory errors from silently corrupting data in transit. ECC is a requirement for reliable ZFS operation; the Mini R includes it as standard equipment.

Frequently asked questions

The TrueNAS Mini R is a 12-bay 1U rackmount NAS, the only rackmount in the Mini Series. Up to 264 TB raw, 2× 10 GbE SFP+, ECC RAM, runs TrueNAS SCALE.

The Mini R is 1U rackmount with 12 bays (264 TB max); the Mini X+ is a desktop tower with 5+2 bays (110 TB max). Same TrueNAS SCALE software, same 2× 10 GbE SFP+ networking, same ECC RAM — the difference is form factor and capacity.

Up to 264 TB raw — the highest in the Mini Series, 2.4× the Mini X+ and 3× the Mini XL+'s 8-bay rackmount config.

Network closets, MDF/IDF rooms, branch-office racks, small data centers. Anywhere you want Mini-class TrueNAS in a rack rather than on a desk.

The R20 starts at 12+2 bays and 3.4 PB raw — 13× the Mini R's capacity ceiling. If you need more than ~250 TB or 10 GbE isn't enough, the R-Series is the right next step.
