Overview

The TrueNAS Mini X brings 10 GbE networking to the desktop NAS form factor as standard equipment — no optional add-in card required. Where the Mini E+ delivers up to 2 Gbps with LACP-bonded 1 GbE links, the Mini X delivers up to 10 Gbps from each of its two SFP+ ports, making it the right choice for environments where a workstation, NVR server, or hypervisor host needs sustained high-bandwidth access to shared storage.

Six hot-swap 3.5″ bays and two M.2 NVMe slots support L2ARC read cache and ZIL/SLOG write log acceleration. The Intel Atom C3758R 8-core processor handles concurrent SMB, NFS, iSCSI, and container workloads without CPU saturation. TrueNAS SCALE runs all of it from a polished browser UI — open source, no per-seat licensing, and a full application catalog for Plex, Nextcloud, MinIO, and more.

Features and Benefits

What makes the TrueNAS Mini X the right step up from entry-level desktop NAS.

Networking and Performance

10 GbE Standard — No Upgrade Card Required

The TrueNAS Mini X ships with two 10 GbE SFP+ ports as standard equipment. Connect directly to a 10 GbE switch or use DAC cables for direct workstation attachment — giving every client on the network access to Mini X throughput at full line rate. For environments running 4K video editing, VM storage, or high-ingest backup targets, 10 GbE standard is the difference between a storage bottleneck and headroom to grow.

8-Core Processor

The Intel Atom C3758R 8-core 2.4 GHz processor handles concurrent SMB, NFS, iSCSI, encryption, and containerized application workloads simultaneously without becoming the CPU bottleneck that limits throughput on lower-core-count desktop NAS platforms.

M.2 NVMe Cache Slots

Two M.2 NVMe/SATA slots support dedicated L2ARC read cache and ZIL/SLOG synchronous write acceleration. Adding NVMe cache dramatically improves random read performance and database/VM write latency without consuming any of the 6 primary drive bays.

Data Protection

01

OpenZFS End-to-End Checksums

Every block written to the Mini X carries a cryptographic checksum. ZFS verifies the checksum at read time and repairs corrupted blocks from redundant copies before returning data to the client — silent corruption is impossible.
02

RAID-Z1, Z2, and Mirrors

Six bays support RAID-Z1 (1 parity, 5 data), RAID-Z2 (2 parity, 4 data), or a 3-drive mirror pair with a hot spare. OpenZFS RAID is software-defined with no proprietary RAID controller required.
03

Instant Snapshots

Create per-dataset ZFS snapshots in milliseconds on a configurable schedule. Snapshots are immutable — ransomware and accidental deletion cannot touch a snapshot that has already been taken.
04

Cloud Sync and ZFS Replication

Push encrypted snapshots to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure, or any S3-compatible target. Replicate datasets to a remote TrueNAS over encrypted ZFS replication for 3-2-1 backup without third-party software.

Software and Applications

TrueNAS SCALE

Linux-based, open-source NAS OS from TrueNAS. Full-featured browser UI, REST API, Active Directory and LDAP integration, VAAI-certified VMware support, and TrueCommand multi-system management — all included at no software licensing cost.

App Catalog (Docker / Kubernetes)

Deploy Plex Media Server, Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, MinIO object storage, Syncthing, and hundreds of containerized apps directly on the Mini X — isolated from storage workloads in Kubernetes-managed containers.

Active Directory Integration

Join the Mini X to existing Windows Active Directory domains. SMB share permissions are controlled through AD groups — no separate NAS user management required for domain-joined environments.

IPMI Out-of-Band Management

Dedicated IPMI LAN port provides remote power control and KVM-over-IP console access regardless of OS state — manage the Mini X from anywhere without requiring physical access to the appliance.

Frequently asked questions

The TrueNAS Mini X is a 5-bay compact desktop NAS with 2× 10 GbE SFP+ networking (standard, not optional), ECC RAM, and up to 108 TB capacity. Sits between the entry Mini E+/E and the higher-spec Mini X+.

The Mini X+ adds two M.2 NVMe bays (5+2 total vs 5), and tops out at 110 TB vs the Mini X's 108 TB. The M.2 bays on the X+ let you use NVMe cache (L2ARC + ZIL) for faster small-file performance.

Up to 108 TB raw across 5 drive bays. The Mini E+ has the same 108 TB ceiling but at 1 GbE baseline networking; the Mini X has 10 GbE SFP+ standard.

Yes — 2× 10 GbE SFP+ is standard on the Mini X (and X+ and XL+). On the Mini E and E+ tiers, 10 GbE is either absent or optional.

Pro media editorial workstations, design studios, small departments needing 10 GbE without rack space. Same data-integrity guarantees (ECC + OpenZFS) as the rest of the Mini Series.
