Overview

The TrueNAS Mini E+ is a compact, entry-level NAS designed to deliver enterprise-grade ZFS storage in a desktop form factor ideal for small businesses, branch offices, and home labs. Built on TrueNAS’ proven platform with ECC RAM and powered by TrueNAS CORE, the Mini E+ protects your data from silent corruption while delivering the flexibility of a full-featured NAS operating system.

With six hybrid bays supporting both 3.5″ and 2.5″ drives, dual Gigabit Ethernet, and optional 10 GbE connectivity, the Mini E+ scales to meet demanding backup, file sharing, and virtualization workloads — all without requiring rack space or data-center power budgets.

Features and Benefits

What sets the TrueNAS Mini E+ apart from generic NAS appliances.

Enterprise Data Integrity

ZFS With ECC RAM — The Gold Standard for Data Protection

TrueNAS CORE runs on OpenZFS, the only filesystem that combines end-to-end checksumming, self-healing RAID-Z, and atomic snapshots in a single stack. Paired with ECC RAM, it eliminates both silent disk corruption and in-memory bit-flip errors that standard NAS solutions miss entirely.

Automated Scrubbing and Self-Healing

ZFS periodically reads every data block on the pool and compares it to its stored checksum. Any corrupted block is automatically repaired from the redundant copy with no administrator action required.

Instant Snapshots and Rollback

ZFS snapshots are created in milliseconds and consume zero additional space until data changes. Roll back any dataset to any prior point in time without restoring from backup — invaluable protection against ransomware and accidental deletion.

Connectivity and Performance

01

Dual Gigabit Ethernet

Two onboard 1 GbE ports support LACP link aggregation for up to 2 Gbps throughput, or active-passive failover for uninterrupted network availability.
02

Optional 10 GbE Expansion

A PCIe expansion slot accepts an optional 10 GbE SFP+ card, enabling high-bandwidth connectivity to workstations and hypervisors without replacing the appliance.
03

SMB, NFS, iSCSI, AFP

TrueNAS CORE ships with full support for Windows SMB, Linux NFS, iSCSI block storage, and legacy AFP for macOS — all configured from a polished browser-based UI.
04

ARC Cache Acceleration

16 GB (up to 32 GB) of ECC RAM doubles as an Adaptive Replacement Cache, delivering faster read speeds for frequently accessed data without adding SSDs.
05

L2ARC and ZIL SSD Support

Dedicated M.2 slots allow you to add an L2ARC read-cache drive and a ZIL/SLOG synchronous-write log device, dramatically accelerating database and virtualization performance.

Simplified Management

TrueNAS CORE — Enterprise Features, Open Source

TrueNAS CORE is TrueNAS’ free, open-source NAS operating system based on FreeBSD. It ships with Active Directory and LDAP integration, scheduled replication to remote TrueNAS systems or cloud providers, a plugin framework for Plex, Nextcloud, and more, plus a Jails and VM subsystem for running Linux workloads directly on the appliance.

Built-In Replication and Cloud Backup

Automate encrypted ZFS replication to a remote TrueNAS system, or push snapshots to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure, and other S3-compatible targets — satisfying the 3-2-1 backup rule without separate software licenses.

Active Directory and LDAP Integration

Join the Mini E+ to your existing Windows domain or LDAP directory in minutes. User permissions on SMB shares are automatically inherited from AD, keeping access controls in sync with your identity provider.

IPMI Out-of-Band Management

The onboard IPMI interface provides out-of-band access for remote power cycling and console access even when the OS is unresponsive — essential for remote offices where physical access is limited.

Plugin and VM Ecosystem

Deploy Plex Media Server, Nextcloud, Bitwarden, and hundreds of other applications as isolated Jails with a single click, or run full Linux VMs side-by-side with your storage workloads.

Frequently asked questions

The TrueNAS Mini E+ is a 5-bay compact desktop NAS, the upgraded Mini E with one more drive bay, up to 108 TB capacity, and an optional 10 GbE upgrade on top of the baseline 2× 1 GbE. ECC RAM, runs TrueNAS SCALE.

The Mini E+ adds a 5th drive bay (5 vs 4 on the Mini E), increases the capacity ceiling to 108 TB, and offers an optional 10 GbE NIC upgrade. Same CPU class and chassis-style as the Mini E.

The X-tier (Mini X, X+) starts at 2× 10 GbE SFP+ as standard, not optional. The Mini X+ is also 5+2-bay (vs E+'s 5-bay), with M.2 cache slots that the E+ lacks.

Up to 108 TB raw, a step up from the Mini E's 72 TB ceiling. Five drive bays let you use 22 TB drives in a single RAID-Z2 pool.

Yes — every Mini Series model ships ECC RAM standard. Combined with OpenZFS, that's the baseline data-integrity guarantee across the Mini line.
