Overview

The TrueNAS Mini XL+ is the highest-capacity model in the TrueNAS Mini desktop lineup, delivering 12 hot-swap drive bays in the same form factor as the rest of the Mini family. With up to 216 TB of raw capacity, it spans the gap between a standard desktop NAS and the entry-level rackmount tier — providing petabyte-approaching capacity without requiring rack infrastructure.

Twelve bays support large RAID-Z2 or RAID-Z3 configurations that would not be possible on 6- or 8-bay models, giving the Mini XL+ meaningful fault tolerance for long-running archives, large Plex libraries, surveillance storage, and SMB file server workloads that have outgrown smaller NAS appliances. Two 10 GbE SFP+ ports, 32 GB of ECC DDR4, and two M.2 NVMe cache slots ensure the storage pool is never the bottleneck.

Features and Benefits

What the TrueNAS Mini XL+ delivers as the highest-capacity model in the Mini desktop lineup.

Capacity and Redundancy

12 Hot-Swap Bays — Maximum Mini Desktop Capacity

Twelve hot-swap 3.5″ bays provide up to 216 TB of raw capacity — the most available in a TrueNAS Mini desktop form factor. With 12 drives, RAID-Z2 (10 data + 2 parity) or RAID-Z3 (9 data + 3 parity) configurations become practical — providing double or triple drive fault tolerance that shorter-bay models cannot achieve without sacrificing too much usable capacity. Large ZFS pools on 12 drives also mean faster rebuild times compared to smaller vdevs.

RAID-Z2 and RAID-Z3 at Scale

12 drives support RAID-Z2 vdevs (2-drive fault tolerance) or RAID-Z3 vdevs (3-drive fault tolerance) without sacrificing most of the raw capacity to parity. RAID-Z3 on 12 drives provides ~75% usable capacity while surviving three simultaneous drive failures.

Hot-Swap No-Tools Drive Replacement

All 12 drive bays are hot-swappable. Pull a failed drive and insert a replacement while the pool continues serving data. ZFS begins the resilver immediately — no downtime, no data loss, no tools required.

Performance

01

10 GbE Standard Networking

Two 10 GbE SFP+ ports deliver up to 10 Gbps of storage bandwidth to connected clients. Aggregate multiple clients over a 10 GbE switch for full multi-client throughput from the 12-drive pool.
02

L2ARC Read Cache (M.2)

Add an NVMe M.2 drive as L2ARC to extend the effective read cache beyond DRAM. Frequently accessed files serve from NVMe latency rather than spinning disk — without consuming any of the 12 primary bays.
03

ZIL/SLOG Write Acceleration (M.2)

A second M.2 NVMe drive as ZIL/SLOG absorbs synchronous writes at NVMe speed before committing to the spinning disk pool. Database, VM, and iSCSI workloads see significantly lower write latency.
04

32 GB ECC ARC Cache

32 GB of ECC DDR4 provides a large in-memory ARC (Adaptive Replacement Cache). Larger working sets fit in memory, reducing the frequency of spinning disk reads for active datasets.

Software and Management

TrueNAS SCALE

Open-source Linux-based NAS OS from TrueNAS. Browser UI, REST API, Active Directory and LDAP, containerized app catalog, KVM VM hosting, VAAI-certified VMware support — all included at no software cost.

Immutable ZFS Snapshots

Per-dataset snapshot schedules with configurable retention. Snapshots are read-only and cannot be deleted by ransomware or application processes — roll back to any prior state without a backup restore.

Cloud Sync and Replication

Push encrypted datasets to Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Azure, or any S3-compatible target. Replicate to a remote TrueNAS for off-site disaster recovery — encrypted ZFS replication transfers only changed blocks after the initial sync.

IPMI Remote Management

Dedicated IPMI LAN provides out-of-band remote power control and console access regardless of OS state — manage the Mini XL+ remotely without requiring physical access to the appliance.

Frequently asked questions

The TrueNAS Mini XL+ is the largest desktop Mini — an 8+2-bay desktop NAS with 2× 10 GbE SFP+, ECC RAM, up to 216 TB raw, and 2 M.2 NVMe cache slots. Runs TrueNAS SCALE.

Eight 3.5″ storage bays plus two M.2 NVMe cache slots. The Mini XL+ doubles the storage bay count of the Mini X+ (8 vs 5) in a slightly larger desktop chassis.

The Mini XL+ is a desktop tower at 8 bays and 216 TB; the Mini R is a 1U rackmount at 12 bays and 264 TB. Pick XL+ when you need more capacity than the X+ but don't have rack space.

Up to 216 TB raw across 8 storage bays. The two M.2 NVMe cache slots aren't counted in capacity.

High-bay-count desktop deployments — photography and video archives, mid-sized creative studios, small-business file servers where 8-bay capacity beats 5-bay X+ headroom and a rack isn't available.
